On October 1st, 2025, the federal government of the United States began a shutdown. This shutdown resulted from Congress’s failure to pass appropriations legislation for the 2026 fiscal year, which is the 12-month accounting period for the U.S. government that spans from October 1 to September 30 of the following calendar year.
A little over a month after it began, the government shutdown continues, and with it come serious implications for the nearly 42 million individuals who utilize the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). After initially stating that SNAP EBT cards would not be refilled and that the program would run out of money on November 1st, the US Department of Agriculture has now stated that SNAP recipients will receive 50% of their benefit amount in November. However, it is unclear when these partial payments will be issued, leaving tens of millions unsure when they will receive assistance. The majority of SNAP recipients are seniors, families with children, and individuals with disabilities.
