Millions of disabled and low-income elderly individuals rely on Social Security benefits or SSI every year, with more than 7 million individuals receiving payments in 2025. These individuals can expect to see an increase in their monthly payment amount in 2027. On October 14th the Social Security Administration announced that SSI and Social Security benefits will rise 3.6% in the new year. The maximum federal SSI benefit for individuals will be $1,029 per month, up from $994 this year, and up to $1,544 per month for couples, compared to $1,491 this year. 2027 will be the first year in history that the individual maximum federal payment has ever exceeded $1,000.
The increase is due to an automatic cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, that occurs each year to account for inflation. The COLA is based on third-quarter results from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, also known as the CPI-W. The CPI-W tracks inflation across more than 200 consumer item categories, including housing, grocery, transportation, medical care and education.
The higher payments will take effect Dec. 31 for the 7.3 million SSI beneficiaries across the country and in January for those receiving Social Security.
