When an individual experiences a severe injury or medical condition that prevents them from being able to work, disability benefits like SSDI are vital for maintaining quality of life. The unfortunate reality is that just because an individual is deserving of and seemingly eligible for these government benefits, that does not guarantee a quick or barrier-free approval. In fact, administrative errors and bureaucratic inefficiencies within the Social Security Administration (SSA) office can often result in delays, wrongful denials, or sudden lapses in benefits. This is where third party benefits experts, like National Care Advisors’ certified Nurse Consultants, can provide invaluable advocacy services.
An individual became severely disabled in October of 2020 due to a serious drug reaction that left them legally blind and unable to work. An initial application for disability benefits was submitted to the SSA in 2020. The claim was denied, followed by an appeal process that lasted more than 500 days prior to National Care Advisors’ involvement. In July 2023, the individual was referred to NCA by their trustee.
Once assigned, NCA Nurse Consultant Lillian jumped into action, filing a request for reconsideration with the SSA that was once again denied the following month. Finally, in March of 2025, after over a year of diligent effort and despite erroneous delays and obstacles, including the client’s file being mistakenly routed to the incorrect location, a hearing was successfully scheduled to be held before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) regarding the client’s eligibility for disability benefits. Lillian attended the in-person hearing alongside the client, and three professional witnesses provided testimony by telephone. In June of 2025, the SSA issued a favorable decision granting the client SSDI benefits, and their first monthly SSDI benefit payment was issued.
Ultimately, it was determined that SSDI benefit eligibility began in April 2021. Lillian and the client continued to reach out to the SSA office regarding the SSDI retroactive benefits. Finally, a direct deposit of $57,000 in back-dated payments was made to the client in March of 2026.
This client’s case is not unique. It reflects an all-too-common reality of how complex and error-prone the Social Security Administration (SSA) system can be. This is where advocacy, expert consulting, and a determination to see a positive outcome become invaluable. Regardless of whether it is local, state, or federal benefits, our team of Nurse Consultants are experts in evaluating, advocating for, and maximizing third-party benefits for the optimal quality of life of the beneficiary.
