Trustees, fiduciaries, and special needs attorneys have an obligation to assist clients and their families to maximize benefits. Federal legislation was recently passed providing stimulus payments to US citizens as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. You can read more in the recent IRS bulletin on stimulus checks – Economic Impact Payments. The value of these payments ranges from $500 for children under age 17 to $1200.

Important notes:

If an individual has filed a tax return in 2018 and 2019, and has a bank account is on file with the IRS that it is current, the payment should appear in their bank account with no further action required.

If the bank account information is not current, they need to update the information on the IRS website.

Many of our low income clients/client families have never filed a tax return. If they did not filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019, NCA case managers can assist to help them to enter in their bank information on the IRS website.

For individuals receiving SSDI, SSI, or Railroad retirement, the payment should appear in their bank account as well, with no further action required. Dependents under age 17 of these individuals will also receive $500.

Individuals can check the status of their stimulus payment online through the IRS website.
